Conart

SWA-240701_streetwear_archive-brands-conart

Founded: 1989
Founder: Ash Hudson
Location: Culver City, CA

Conart was founded by Ash Hudson, a writer from Culver City, who started selling DIY graff shirts in high school and transitioned it into a t-shirt line after demand for his custom made shirts grew beyond what he could hand-make. Within a couple of years, Conart had over a million dollars in revenue and nearly 500 shops carrying the line, with half of their retailers in Japan, where Conart was a huge success, along with concurrent surge in the popularity of hip hop, graff and b-boy culture.

Conart’s influence across the hip hop and b-boy scene was massive and even spilled into the mainstream. They designed tour shirts and album covers for groups like A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde and even worked with Guns N’ Roses at one point.

Conart even released comic books and had planned on doing an animated series.

In additional to Conart’s graff based designs, arguably, their most notable and sought after t-shirt design is one with a photo of a Ku Klux Klan member and his kid captioned “Future Police Officer.”
