Subware

Founded: 1993
Founder: Josh “Stash” Franklin
Location: New York, NY
Subware was founded by Mr Stash, Josh Franklin in 1993, after the success of the legendary Phillies Blunt tee design by Stash, Futura and Gerb, Stash. It began as Franklin just want to print graff themed tees for those in the scene. It was a passion project. He wanted his own tees with graff pieces and designs from his favorite artists of the time and they didn’t exist. So he made it happen himself and it quickly grew to more than that with high profile musicians and celebs repping Subware almost immediately after launch.
In later seasons, Subware released some insane tech-wear. Franklin was actually working at Burton at the same time he was doing Subware and his experience and access at Burton allowed him to have some exceptionally high-quality pieces that other smaller indie streetwear brands couldn’t do. He also collaborated with Errolson Hugh in the early stages of Acronym which became a big influence as he advanced to his next concept Recon.
Mr. Stash was the sole owner and founder. Most people mistakenly assume that Futura was an owner, which makes sense because of the close ties at the time and the fact that Futura did contribution graphics and designs to the Subware line, but that was the extent of that.
