Stoopid / Stoopid Clothing
Founded: 1991
Founder: Michael Pringle
Location: San Diego, CA
Stoopid Clothing was founded in 1991 by Michael Pringle. Stoopid was a big player in the streetwear scene in the early and mid 1990s, but possibly more significant to the scene than Stoopid Clothing were Pringle’s others ventures. After Stoopid’s first showing at ASR (Action Sports Retail Show) in San Diego, he partnered with Grant Lau and opened Behind The Post Office, which was a streetwear, hip hop and culture mecca, not only for those living in the area, but for anyone that visited San Diego, especially those coming in for ASR.
In addition to BTPO, Pringle also founded the 432F show that was at 432 F Street in San Diego, running concurrent to ASR. After some of the big sports sellers started complaining that ASR was moving too far away from action sports and there was too much hip hop, rave and streetwear taking over the show, ASR started rejected lines whose designs included graffiti, violence, guns, sex and drugs, (which ironically was all a part of skateboard culture anyway). It was all an excuse to push hip hop and club influenced streetwear brands out of the show.
In response, Pringle started 432F, which was just down the street from ASR and where all the buyers for the independent shops ended up spending most of their time. 432F helped kick start brands like Conart, Echo Unlimited and others that may not have gotten the exposure needed to be successful if it wasn’t for Pringle and 432F.
