Q-Ambient Wear

SWA-240701_streetwear_archive-brands-q-ambient-02

Founded: 1992
Founder: John Dance
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Q Ambient was founded by John Dance in 1992.  John was part of the Los Angeles rave scene and started the line that became famously known for their high quality, wide leg raver pants, complete with big, long pockets to stash all your stuff.  The pockets were designed specifically to be deep enough to comfortably hold a can of Krylon spray paint.  All the early Q Ambient pants had the infamous red Q patch on the back pocket.

By the mid-90s, Q Ambient had expanded the line from t-shirt and their denim Americana pants, to a large range of cut-and-sew, including sports themed Activ Wear, leisure style printed shirts, shorts, printed tees and hats, including the ever-present baseball caps as well as visors, even headbands.  They even had some pretty high-tech backpacks and bags, which was forward thinking for the time.

By 1996, Q-Ambient had also launched a full line of women’s clothes called Q Female.  They had previously done a few pieces in their lookbooks, like t-shirts and the odd one-off cut-and-sew, but 1996 marked a new change with a full catalog of looks for ladies.  Unfortunately, not long after, Q-Ambient disappeared from the scene.  Their phones were shut off and they didn’t show at any of the typical streetwear retailer shows, like ASR in San Diego or Magic.

A couple years later, in 1999, they sent their retailers a letter informing them that the company had regrouped, reorganized and was back from the dead.  They pushed a full line of men’s and women’s clothes for summer 1999 and announced collaborations with both Loud Records and the rapper Xzibit.
