Jeremy Fox started Death Box Skateboards in 1987.  A couple years later, Fox and Ian Deacon also started Bash Skateboards in the UK, but by 1992, both companies fizzled out and Fox and Deacon form Flip from the ashes of Death Box and Bash, including Geoff Rowley, who was previously on Death Box.  Around 1994, they moved from the UK to California and the rest is history.
