Chocolate Skateboards

SWA-240701_streetwear_archive-brands-chocolate

Founded: 1994
Founder: Rick Howard, Mike Carroll, Spike Jonze & Megan Baltimore
Location:  Torrance, CA

Chocolate Skateboards was started in 1994 as a sister company to Girl Skateboards.  In fact it was originally supposed to be called Sister, but before they could trademark the name, Steve Rocco (in true Rocco fashion) trademarked the name and they couldn’t use it.  So the new company originally envisioned as Sister, became Chocolate at the last minute after Megan floated the name off the top of her head and everyone else agreed on it.  In the end, it all worked out pretty good for them.

The Girl pro roster had started to get too crowded so they moved Chico Brenes from Girl to Chocolate and added Keenan Milton, Daniel Castillo, Paulo Diaz, Richard Mulder, Shamil Randle, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Ben Sanchez to make up the original Chocolate team.

With Spike Jonze as a founder, they obviously had some incredible videos and even did some skits inbetween the pro parts.  They were also known for their collabs that started in the mid 90s with brands like: Lakai, Thrasher, Converse, X-Large, Nike, Huf and even Sanrio.
