Dogtown Skateboards

Founded: 1976
Founder: Jeff Muir
Location: Venice, CA
The original Dogtown Cross logo was created by CR Stecyk in the mid 70s. It was a representation of the Venice/Santa Monica area which was nicknamed Dogtown, by local skaters and surfers of the time. The logo was first put in print in Skateboard Magazine in 1976. Dogtown was founded by Jim Muir with help from his brother Mike Muir, who while living with him at the time, founded the seminal punk band, Suicidal Tendancies. Jim was a Zephyr Skateboards team rider at the time, along with Stacy Peralta. Dogtown, Zephyr and Suicidal Tendancies were all closely tied together and were responsible for the true birth of street skating, as riders pushed the current limits of skateboarding to incorporate surfing style moves, style and tricks.
