Porn Star / Porn Star Clothing / Starlette

Founded: 1992
Founder: Sean Murphy and Barret Murphy
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Porn Star actually started out as a punk rock band started by twin brothers Sean and Barret Murphy. When their merch sold more than their music, they decided to flip it into a streetwear brand. As a streetwear clothing line, it was one of the brands, like Serial Killer and others, that Fuct paved the pathway for.
By the late 90s/early 2000s they had a loyal following and were getting placement in TV and movies and being repped by Ron Jeremy (of course) who was even featured in their video, The People vs. Porn Star (a take a on the Larry Flynt doc)
Porn Star was one of the brands that probably would have outgrown their skate roots and crossed over into the mainstream, but never did. When kids started wearing their tees to school and mall skate and surf shops started dabbling with the brand, all hell broke loose in some cities, with them even being mentioned in local news segments.
A lot of brands start with the idea and ethos that they would never sell out, but once you grow to that point, things have changed and you’re not the same brand you were in the early days. With Porn Star, anti-mainstream was baked-in when they chose the brand name. There was no option for mass appeal.
