Coogi
Founded: 1969
Founder: Jack Taranto
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Coogi is a luxury brand from Melbourne, Australia, so it’s a little wacky that it ended up being such a signficant part of the streetwear scene. The brand was founded in 1969 by Jack Taranto focusing primarily on high quality woven sweaters.
Coogi’s use of bold patterns, textures and colors, including stripes and geometric patterns make them instantly recognizable, even amongst copycats. During the 1980s and 1990s, Coogi became the it fashion item in the hip hop and rap scene, being worn by artists, producers and fans alike.
Many consider their sweaters to be works of art, because of the attention to detail and hand craftsmanship that each piece contains. While Coogi as a brand is still going strong today – including the expansion of product offerings to shirts, pants, dresses and accessories, the vintage sweaters are the pieces that are still highly in demand in the vintage and collector scene.
