Anarchic Adjustment
Founded: 1986
Founder: Nick Philip
Location: London, England
Anarchic Adjustment is one of the most sought after streetwear brands. It was founded by British artist and designer Nick Philip in the late 1980s and known for its unconventional and subversive designs, and counter-culture themes. Anarchic Adjustment gained popularity in the underground fashion scene for its bold graphics, punk-inspired aesthetic, and DIY ethos.
Hiroshi Fujiwara, the godfather of the Japan’s streetwear scene (also a designer, producer and musician and Japan’s first hip hop DJ) helped popularize the brand in Japan in the late 80s.
The brand’s clothing and accessories often feature anarchic motifs, such as political slogans, anti-establishment imagery, and subcultural references. Anarchic Adjustment became closely associated with the rave and punk movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s, attracting a dedicated following that still thrives today.
Anarchic Adjustment’s designs are characterized by their handcrafted and eclectic nature, reflecting Philip’s background in art and his rejection of mainstream fashion norms. The brand’s started with t-shirts and hoodies, but grew quickly to include jackets, hats, and accessories, as well as a massive selection of very high-quality cut and sew pieces.
Some of their most famous pieces were their most unique, including their hand hats, DJ vests with a pouch to store records in the back, and their tee designs featuring rips from the Akira anime series. Nearly any Anarchic Adjustment pieces currently sell on the second-hand and collector market for fat stacks of cash.
In 2020, Anarchic Adjustment resurfaced in the form of a capsule collection with skateboarding company Palace Skateboards, releasing updated versions their classic designs and new ones. Most items sold out quickly and even these releases are still highly sought-after.
